BMI is body mass in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. At 70 kg and 170 cm that is 70 ÷ (1.70 × 1.70) ≈ 24.2. You enter height in centimetres; the calculator converts to metres.
Below 18.5 is underweight, 18.5–24.9 is the healthy range, 25–29.9 overweight, 30–34.9 class I obesity, 35–39.9 class II, 40 and above class III. The bands are for adults, not children.
No. A high BMI in a muscular person is not obesity, and a “normal” BMI can still hide excess visceral fat. For body composition, use the body-fat or waist-to-hip calculators instead.
The calculator shows the mass range that corresponds to BMI 18.5–24.9 at the height you entered. That is a WHO orientation, not a training target. Athletes and older adults often need a different assessment than the index alone.
